Yoga For Kids

Yoga is one of my favourite things to do, as I find it helps to reduce stress. I get such a wonderful sense of calm after a session, plus I enjoy staying flexible and keeping strong.

Yesterday I booked my girls into a kids yoga class for the first time. They've seen me and their dad practice and they like to join in doing some of the poses. Their little bodies are already so flexible, but it can help them to unwind as well.

I didn't stay for their session, as I didn't want them to be distracted by my presence. I was hoping that they would enjoy it, so just before there class ended, I snuck up and had a look through the window and they were relaxing under a blanket. When they came out Ava said "I don't want to go", I was disappointed as I thought she didn't want to go again, but no, she didn't want to leave the class. Yippee!!! They LOVED it.

On the way home they were so cute chanting "Ooommms", then at home they were showing us what poses they did. I am so happy and hopefully they will continue to enjoy it, as it will help them in years to come when school gets more stressful.

Smart move. Yoga's a wonderful thing to introduce to anyone and especially kids.

It's something on my never ending to do list and that's what attracted me to your post.

best wishes for a life time of flexibility :)

Yoga is something I really, really, really need to do. Do you think there is any benefit in getting a dvd and doing it at home or do you think classes are the better option?
Ooh yes some Yoga....THAT's what I need....Maybe in a few months time.... ** wink ** ....!

I can just picture your GORGEOUS girls in the class today Alison....Another WONDERFUL memory they'll thank you for....!

Hope you all have a FABULOUSLY relaxing weekend....NO pun intended....!

Cheers,
Tamarah :o)
I love yoga and my daughter and I have been on a few family yoga classes. I always think that yoga should be taught at school, young kids would love all those animal associations like the down and up dog, the cat, the cobra and so on.

Well done on your daily October post by the way, you're doing good girl!

In response to Lillabilly about starting yoga. I would recommend attending a beginners class in a yoga studio (I go to Iyenger classes) to get a good grounding on the basics to prevent injuries, also the instructor will show you the easier poses first and will be able to adjust poses if you already have an injury. A good instructor will move about the class and ease you into the correct pose and help you to use your breath to get the most out it.

As well as going to other classes, I still attend the same class that I started with seven years ago, as I have a great respect for my instructor and how she leads a class. She's seen me struggle with the simplest of poses in the beginning and helped me do yoga through two pregnancies. This class is full of all levels and age groups and I have met some wonderful people as we laugh, grunt and groan together.

I hope you do give it a try, and persevere with it, as you will be sore the next few days, using muscles you never knew you had.

Oh, thanks so much for that, Alison! I have problems with my right shoulder and neck and so I feel that yoga would be extremely beneficial and you make a good point that an instructor will be able to help work around this! I shall have to do a little research into classes in my area!
